Lisbon Flea Market

It sure isn’t much like the local shopping mall! When we arrived at the flea market in Lisbon, it was late morning, and the crowds were already streaming their way past booths set-up by vendors from all over. Some of the merchandise looked like it could be found in any nearby tourist souvenir shop. But other booths featured hand-crafted items from local artisans, or assorted pieces from antique shops.

But I’m more interested in the people who have come to this flea market. It’s early September in Lisbon, so there are still a fair number of tourists, from other parts of Europe and other parts of the world. Some of the people appear to be locals, regular scavengers haggling for the best possible deal.

I had to fulfill two roles at the flea market; tourist and traveling paparazzi. As a tourist, I was able to find a couple of items (a hat and a small backpack) crafted out of Portuguese cork. As a travelling photographer, I was able to chronicle my visit with images that will always take me back.
